Colin Luther Powell was born in Harlem, New York City. Colin Luther Powell was of Jamaican American heritage. Education took place at City College of New York, where Colin Luther Powell earned a Bachelor of Science degree in geology and participated in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps. Active professional years spanned from the 1950s through the early 2000s.
Colin Luther Powell married Alma Johnson Powell, and the couple had three children: Michael Powell, Linda Powell, and Annemarie Powell. Residence included Washington, D.C., and Virginia. Interests included public speaking, writing, and education advocacy.
Colin Luther Powell is most recognized for serving as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989 to 1993, overseeing U.S. military operations during the Gulf War. Strategic leadership contributed to a decisive coalition victory. Colin Luther Powell later became the first African American United States Secretary of State, serving from 2001 to 2005. Diplomatic leadership during this period included engagement in global security and international alliances.
Colin Luther Powell held numerous military commands, rising to the rank of four star general. Service included tours in Vietnam and leadership roles within the Pentagon. As National Security Advisor under President Ronald Reagan, Colin Luther Powell coordinated national security policy during a critical period of Cold War transition. Chairmanship of the Joint Chiefs of Staff placed Colin Luther Powell at the highest level of military leadership, overseeing operations in Panama and the Persian Gulf.
